NUST University Development Office collaborated with NUST Entrepreneurs Network to hold its first networking event for the entrepreneurs of NUST. The motivation behind this session was to give a platform to the inspiring and high achieving NUST alumni so that they can share their success stories, and inspire the students into assimilating the skills, forming connections, and maximizing resources and ideas via the alumni network.
After an opening statement from the President of NUST Alumni Association (NAA), Ammar Ahmed Khan, the esteemed guests were called upon to introduce themselves and share their unique start-ups and their stories. Among the guests included representatives of companies like PLUMgrid, Future Composites, Flaccid Systems and Caravaan Enterprises, a multifaceted consultancy firm, operating in Islamabad and Peshawar.
Highlight of the event was the talk session by Dr. Mohsin Tiwana, the ace entrepreneur hailing from EME College, renowned for the successful building and selling of multiple start-ups. Dr. Mohsin – gold medalist, presidential award winner, and winner of the prestigious Technology Transformer of the Year Award by CRDF Global – mainly talked about his position as the founder and editor of his blog “Reality Pod”, and how he started from the starch and led it to selling it as a multi-million project. He also narrated the story of his other venture, OzLumen; which he started out of a moment of curiosity and eventually turned it into a very successful company, While narrating his story, he highlighted how this product was at first turned down by a company in Germany, but rather than losing heart, he found a new desire and determination to keep it going. He told everyone that after being launched in March 2011, OzLumen quickly made its name in Australian retail market for affordable quality projectors. OzLumen was eventually acquired by a Melbourne based company in October 2012 for a hefty profit.
Second star of the night was EME’s very own Dr. Shoab Ahmed Khan. Dr. Khan has a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA. He is an inventor of 5 awarded US patents and has 250+ international publications. He has been awarded Tamgh-e-Imtiaz for his contribution in the field of Engineering. He is a founding member of CASE and CARE and HOD of the Computer Engineering Dept. at NUST College of EME.
Under his leadership CARE has truly become a center of Excellence in engineering. CARE has won twelve P@SHA ICT awards and ten APICTA merit AWARDS while competing with best products coming from countries like Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia.
He encouraged all the people present to take up entrepreneurship not just as a hobby or a time pass, but as a passion with full dedication. But he also forewarned everyone that although it might seem like all fun and games, but in reality starting your own business will take a lot of sacrifice and strength of character and resolve. He gave his own example that how early on in his career at one time he turned absolutely broke after investing everything he had in a venture which didn’t go as per the plan. But using the adversity as an opportunity he worked even harder, and now his success speaks of itself.
The wonderful session concluded with all the guests gathering around for a cup of tea, where they were given an opportunity to interact with other successful entrepreneurs.
