If you think this article is about to give details and pros and cons of MS thesis and course work track, then your guess is not 100 % true. Actually this article is about a meeting of SEECS authorities with students about this issue and I am going to cover that. I should red alert you first that the content in this this article is what I got from that meeting. Someone else could have an entirely different opinion.Which track one should adopt? This is a very confusing question for an average student like me. Reason for confusion is that most of us have not already started some research work at the end of course work, but we have loads of experience of one-night study, so course work track looks charming at first glance.
So with this frame of mind, I attended that meeting. In the official opening 5 minute speech, we were offered course work track, so you can take two courses instead of a thesis and can complete your degree. No new course from the same track will be offered, you can take courses from other tracks or from other campuses of NUST. Any questions? The speech was all good and short but then there was QA session and an email which students received the next day, stating that you can take courses from anywhere in NUST, but don’t try to do that as this will complicate administration stuff . The QA session had these important points:
- To start non-thesis track, you have to fill a form, and in case you already have started your thesis, you will also need approval from your advisor.
- MS thesis track is over all better than non-thesis track.
- You can choose non-thesis track if you are doing some job and you want to leave campus as soon as possible.
- The course work track or non-thesis track is for all programmers.
- MS course work track will be approximately end of your studies era.
And after this there was an emotional speech by principal SEECS that we are going down in ranking due to lesser publication, so choose thesis track and do some hard work to improve standards. After all this, I have made a final conclusion for students living in grey area that first give a chance to your thesis for at-least 6 months and try hard. If you achieve initial results, or at least a valid research question, then you should continue this track, otherwise fill the form and the game will be over in next 6 months.
