Over the years, NUST has grown tremendously, becoming the best institute in the country. And as NUST has grown, so have its students, both in numbers and skills. NUSTans have made a name for themselves, their university and Pakistan through out the world with their hard work and talent.
One of the most recent success stories for NUST has come at the hands of a most talented group of young and ambitious engineers from College of Electrical And Mechanical Engineering. Taking part this year in the prestigious Shell Eco Marathon(SEM), Team EMENENTS, representing NUST and Pakistan proved that even with the most meagre resources, Pakistani engineers are second to none.
Shell Eco Marathon is an annual event held in malayasia to promote highly fuel efficient concept cars. The challenge is to drive the longest distance in one litre of gasoline or any alternate fuel source.Building on the experience gained from last year, Team Emenents set out to make history. They made not one but two cars competing in two categories, the urban concept (UC) and the prototype. Despite the fact that teams from Pakistan have been taking part in SEM frequently, they have never actually had any substantial success mostly due to financial constraints. The team drive train expert, Kamal Rahim, remembers the challenges they faced working on the car and getting sponsors to pay for the extremely costly venture. “Financial issues proved to be alot more challenging than the technical ones.We were constantly designing and redesigning to get the best performance out of the cheapest and most affordable equipment”. Their unprecedented success certainly testified of their hardwork.
With the teams from China, India and other countries having much better financed cars, they were in an obvious advantage.Emenents also faced huge setbacks when their cars were stopped by Malayasian authorities at the seaport, wasting valuable testing and repairing time. But this young team was determined to prove themselves.
Talking about his experience, racing on the SEPANG INTERNATIONAL F1 CIRCUIT, the team driver and media manager,Mujtaba Hassan Raza, said ” It was certainly an extremely difficult task. We already suffered alot due to the custom fiasco and with some testing left we had to put our car on the track before the tracktime finished. But with the grace of God the car performed flawlessly on the final day.I couldn’t have been more pleased with it”.
They ended up not just being the only team from Pakistan to complete the track, but the also achieved the marvelous feat of finishing 6th beating teams from India and some of the best universities from Asia .
Their success certainly proved that the talented youth of this country has the ablity to achieve laurels for Pakistan. The only thing needed is institutional and financial support by Public and private sector as well as media support to highlight achievements of students to attract more sponsors towards the educational sector.
