SPLASH, icy cold water hit me like an iron fist and knocked me out of breath I woke up cursing at the top of my voice, completely disoriented and disillusioned. As I looked into my surroundings, I couldn’t understand what was happening. Was I dreaming or what and then I was brought back to reality when something hard hit me just below my ribs I shrieked and shouted with all my might but whatever or whoever it was kept on coming, it hit me again and again and again. It was pitch black, utter darkness in my room. I couldn’t see a damn thing. Then suddenly all the lights of my room flashed on and as my eyes adjusted to the lights, It all came back to me. It was my birthday and my room was full of my friends all hostelites and of course whole of my floor and in their hands were the wet towels whose prints were now whole over my body. My joints ached with the beating I had just had and then another tub of cold water was splashed on me. Although instinctively I cried, “NO”, but I knew it wasn’t going to do me any good cause I knew the night had only just begun.
After torturing me for hours my friends finally brought in my Birthday cake and a loud chorus of the birthday song broke out and I saw my friends singing me the song just like when I was a small kid. I realized that it was the best birthday I ever had. I couldn’t believe that it had been only six months since the first time we saw each other arriving on the orientation day and then going off to our respective hostels At Nust H-12. All of us nostalgic and home sick and really really scared of what was coming next. Ragging has always been a tradition in universities all over the world and so was it in Nust. I could still clearly remember the faces of all my friends on the first day frightened and so terrified as we all sat locked up into our rooms fretting and fidgeting whenever there was a knock on the doors. It was as if devil itself had come to drag us to hell. The seniors were always one step ahead of us despite every caution we took they still found a way to get to us and right then while being ragged along with all of them we became good friends.
For the first few weeks we sat around cursing our miserable lives and intimated, disgruntled and resentful towards our misfortunes. But as the time went by we started changing slowly, started adapting to the new environment and before we knew it we started loving our hostel. It became our home to us and friends became more of a family. And now when we remember those first few weeks we share quite a few laughs, recalling the expression of one friend or the other while he was being ragged before our very eyes.
No one can even start to image how very invigorating, exciting and exhilarating is it to stand on the roof of the hostel ,a four storey giant structure, in the cool spring breeze and watch the beauty of our university lying on all fours around us or to play football well after midnight in the rain or to watch a cricket or football match in the TV lounge with all the other hostilities, the shouts and laughter and hooting that goes around when our favourite team wins or to order a pizza after midnight and enjoy it with a movie even when we know that each of us has classes in the morning. Even the preparations for exams becomes an enjoyment when studying in a group with friends. It’s amazing to see how easily we all fit in with each other. The things that are annoying in the beginning became delightful once you get settled in.
Hostel life is the best part of our life. It is something none of you would want to miss. The time spend in the hostel is memorable and unforgettable. Hostel life is no doubt the most terrific time of our lives so you’d better not miss it. You won’t even know what you are missing until you get here. The friends you’ll make in hostel will last for your whole life and will never bale out on you. I can say one thing with complete assurity the Hostel life at Nust H-12 is awesome you’ll be at a complete liberty and freedom to do anything you like of course that only includes the things that are legal by law. There are no particular restriction to anything and you’ll not be bound to anything that you’ll think is irrational. There are of course some rules and regulations to be followed the usual ones of course like not smoking within the hostel parameters and not breaking the furniture. I got caught twice playing cricket in the hostel corridor and believe me I wasn’t very happy when I had to pay the fine. Other than that if you live in civil and humane way I guarantee you you’ll have the best time of your lives. Believe me hostel life at H_12 is more fun than you can ever think of.
No one can fully understand the way it feels to sit in the café with friends having dinner with them throwing lame jokes at each other with the others laughing their heads off, until the experience it. Sometimes things do to tend to get rough especially when there’s are challenge matches between cricket, football or volleyball’s team of different hostels. But as long as everyone enjoys those matches we can cope up with our differences on the field. You have to live it to believe it.
So all the very best for your decision. I hope you make the right one. There are always ups and downs, that how life works and believe me you’ll live through them and even find a way to relish them later on. So take up the opportunity you have of spending 4 years in hostel and make full of it because these days are never coming back. You can do whatever stupid or crazy things in the hostel you like and the best part is no one is going to judge you. So be happy and just benefit from what you have. MAZEL TOV.
