A team of five students from NUST Business School set out to make their mark in the local round of CFA’s third Investment Research challenge (IRC) which was held in Karachi at Marriot on December 13th, 2010. They won the challenge and proved it once again that the students at NUST do know how to compete and establish themselves to be the best. CFA stands for Chartered Financial Analyst and CFA institute is a global body of investment professionals from over 100 countries in the world.
Investment Research Challenge (IRC) was organized by CFA Pakistan. Students from the Pakistan’s top business schools availed the opportunity to learn from the industry experts and compete with their peers. The challenge is basically known to teach its participants best practices in equity research through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis and presentation skills. This time seven teams comprising of four to five students selected from IBA, SZABIST, NUST, IBM, Greenwich, IQRA and MAJU participated in this event. The subject company for research this year was HUB Power Company (HUBCO). HUBCO is the largest independent energy provider in Pakistan.
The project which was more like a case study and was tough yet challenging as the students had to make it as objective as possible and then compete on such a difficult sector which is facing a lot of crisis and is quite prominent in the news these days. The equity report was submitted 12 days prior to their arrival in Karachi for the final presentation. It was for the second time that the NUST team competed in the event. Last year’s team won the presentation round but this year our team won the whole challenge. This year the team managed to realize the vision and brought the trophy to Islamabad . The competition since its inception has always been won by IBA and this was a welcome break from tradition.
After winning the competition the team is heading to Bali – Indonesia for the Regional Investment Research Challenge where it will compete with teams from China, Hong Kong, Philippines, Indonesia, India, Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Singapore. No doubt the competition will be tougher as now it is on the regional level (Asia Pacific).
This year 2000 students from 500 universities are competing across the world in the challenge. The winning team at the regional level will head to Nebraska, USA for the Global Investment Research Challenge.
Our team will be leaving at the end of February to represent NUST and above all Pakistan. We wish them all the very best, pray for their success with the hope that they bring laurels to the university again. InshAllah
