By : Saaqib Malik (SCEE)

DICE 2010 seeks to bring together projects that represent innovation and collaboration with the industry on competitive basis. This competition not only motivates students to bring forward practical ideas representing digital innovation, but also provides a platform for students and supervisors to meet and have an intellectual discourse. DICE 2010 was held on 21-22 December, 2010 at Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad. Event was planned under technical guidance of Dr. Khurshid Qureshi, a leading industrial expert from USA. Student projects all over Pakistan were invited in DICE 2010 for their exhibition and competition. The best projects were to be awarded for their innovative and practical ideas.

A delegation of the NUST Science Society visited DICE ’10 on 21st December; Tuesday. The delegation was headed by Sir Asad Butt and comprised of society members from different wings. IST welcomed the delegation and was led to the exhibition. Stalls from different universities and industries awaited, willing to share their perspective of the Digital innovation and their creativity.

The projects were categorized into the following categories

  • Communications Projects
  • Bio Medical Engineering Project
  • Electronics Projects
  • Robotics Projects
  • Embedded Systems Projects
  • Image Processing Project
  • Mechanical Related Projects
  • Textile Related Project
  • Materials Project
  • Aeronautical

The following universities participated and had their projects displayed,

  • KICSIT, Kahuta
  • COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Lahore
  • Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad
  • University of Punjab, Lahore
  • COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Islamabad
  • UET, Taxila
  • Air University, Islamabad
  • SEECS, NUST Islamabad
  • UET Peshawar
  • International Islamic University, Islamabad
  • University of Punjab, Lahore
  • The University of Lahore

The delegation visited every stall one by one, demonstrations were given along with the elaboration of underlying concepts. It was good to see that a number of stalls were occupied by Nustians. The projects that were displayed by Nustians are as follows

  • Porting of ANDROID OS on ARM Based Machine and Application Development
  • To design a highly secure voice encryption/decryption algorithm and its implementation on hardware FPGA board.
  • Game Development using keyboard, mouse and VGA interface on FPGA.
  • Implementation of Pipelined Processor
  • Voice Encryption and Decryption Using Filters Interface with FPGA.
  • Stimulators and Acupuncture Devices
  • LCD and Keypad Based Railway Ticketing System.
  • Design and fabrication of 3-axis CNC milling Router
  • Design of vision based autonomous navigation system for unmanned aerial vehicles
  • Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Algorithm Development And Implementation On FPGA
  • Development of a Generic Flight Simulator for Fixed Wing Aircraft

IST welcomed the guests with hospitality. The delegation was shown to the mass after visiting of projects.  Though the delegation was late to the competition yet it was given full attention.

However, it was felt that DICE could have used a bit more innovation and interactivity. NUST Science Society has the potential to make such an event way more successful and hopes are high that NSS will have the opportunity to set a higher standard.
