Get Started !!!

This Article is written by Ms.Sana Zafar who is a faculty at SMME, NUST.

As rightly said “When is the right time to take a start? It was yesterday”!

You can never expect the grass to be greener after four years unless you provide it with the required water at the right time. A huge misconception prevails throughout Pakistani youth that only business students should be on their toes for getting work experience during degree, we don’t need that…we are engineers!!

If we put this assertion in pragmatic terms, we will hardly find any supporting argument. Why a “NO” if you are into BE? You don’t intend to work once you graduate? Of course you do!!

Keeping in mind the prevailing economic situation of the world in general and Pakistan in particular, it gets extremely important to secure jobs in every possible way.  It’s true that nobody really teaches you how to become CEO of “Apple” or “BMW” when you are an intern or employee at some organization, you hardly get paid and above all you waste your vacations!!  So why to get into the hassle?

Let’s have a look at the bigger picture. Even if you learn literally nothing at internship or a job, it still gets a place in your CV in the work experience column, which in turn makes your potential employers prefer your CV over the ones having lesser or no experience. The most beneficial outcome of internship is networking. You get to know people, even if you only assist them in work but if you do it with punctuality and prove yourself as a keen learner; it is highly likely that these contacts will respond to your calls once you need them in future.

Working during the degree makes you explore the new horizons. Science in books is pretty much different than the science of real world of job market.  Areas that interest you in theory might look different when practically applied while working. You can develop and nurture your interests in the fields with better potential in the years to come.  You can choose your area of specialization that is majors of the degree with more realistic analysis. Your areas of interest and experience get broaden in a positive manner. Just by observing at work place one learns work ethics, etiquettes and most importantly right attitude towards work.

Getting started during degree unfolds many other realities as well. The perceived view of jobs for students is “it’s always about the money”.  What if you start a job with a salary of 80k, while your friend starts with 40k? After ten years he owns his own company, makes lot more money and groomed professionally a lot more than you are, and you are still making the very same 80k? A work experience teaches the importance of work environment, reporting relationships and most importantly the potential for learning and progress in a particular job.

The only thing that must be kept in mind is the fact that studies must not be compromised no matter what. Experience does count more than grades, but you cannot stand anywhere unless you have these grades and you graduate successfully.

Secure future is something you owe to yourself for putting in so many efforts for the degree, to your parents who sacrificed happily for letting you live your dream and may be their dream as well and above all to your country which provided you with the opportunity to be an engineer from a prestigious university.

yah I agree with you more than ever. I am only of those few who did an internship at an engineering company in first year summer vacation. It was termed wastage of time even by the faculty at NUST sadly. But you must also look at the reality. The companies don't let u get to the real engineer designs until you are an employee. and many other. the internship is good in respect to know how the office works, office etiquette but they don't let you near the real engineering.

My internship was totally technical although not related to my discipline mainly. But it was in a manufacturing industry and it was at PEL.
