3rd June 2010, was the day when the graduating degree at EME displayed the results of the previous one year’s hard work. It was the open house and job fair combined!!
The opening ceremony started at around 10’oclock in the morning. The chief guest was Lt Gen (R) Sabeeh Qamar uz Zaman. The Commandant and HOD Department of Mechanical Engineering who was the chief organizer of the event also addressed the ceremony. The commandant congratulated the students who were going to succeed and rest of them not to lose hope and keep on their hard work.
After that the graduating degree moved to the stalls and guests after having refreshment had a round of the stall area. The projects were displayed in temporary tents in the lawn near the officer’s mess and the ante room. It was really hot and dusty in there on such a day of summer.
The graduating degree had a wave of optimism when the chief organizer mentioned that around eighty companies are going to visit and more than fifteen will be conducting tests and interviews after the open house. But all this optimism met a gloomy beach when after perspiring in the hot weather in their suits they could not count even eight companies visiting and only about three to four companies and organizations took tests and interviews of a selected few. Another mishap which the electrical department students had to face was printing of their old resumes in the graduate profile and a number of other mistakes. Many of them could not even find their resumes in it.
It was a very good exercise displaying the projects and highlighting the hard work of students. This should be applauded and encouraged but unfortunately since the last some years the results are disappointing which may have a number of reasons. It is a forum where students get an opportunity to interact with the industry and attract them for jobs and collaboration with the academia. Many of the graduating students called it a fruitless exercise since no one could get a job through this.
The open house should be arranged in a well organized manner and at a place with a good environment. The organizing committee should be consisting of well experienced persons who should be relieved of other responsibilities while preparing for the event and inviting the industry like the very nice work being done by the placement office at NUST. Students and the alumni may be called to assist and give a helping hand during the process. We really hope that next degree enjoys its open house and reap the benefits in the real sense.
